Correspondent: Dennis "Eazy-D" Spence

Eazy-D was born on a rainy morning in the sultry July heat of 1978.  His mother fondly recalls the day with a tale of going into labor while watching Roadrunner cartoons.  On the ride home, "We Are the Champions" played on the radio and the two speechless parents wondered what this child's future would be.

Chronological list of Inspirations Leading to the Development of Eazy-D:

1) His Mom's Band  2) Children of the Corn  3) La Bamba  4) "Sweet Child of Mine"  5) Lost Boys

6) Black Sabbath  7) The Buddy Holly Story  8) Slick Rick  9) The Ramones  10) His Mom teaching how to play "House of the Rising Sun" on the guitar

All this has led Eazy-D to be a distinguished local artist and writer as well as the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist and founding member of the barcore pint rockers, Jackmove.  Eazy-D is available for contact on MySpace and Facebook.

Kelsey Ball is somewhat of a mixed breed. Born in the USA and raised in the tropical island of Bermuda, she has a unique perspective on music, culture and life in general. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a double major in Psychology and Music and she was an active hip-hop dancer, musician and writer in her community.  Having begun the violin at age 3 and the flute at age 8, music has always been an integral part of her life.  While her music tastes are diverse, ranging from avant-garde minimalism to hip hop and r&b, her true passion is for reggae and dancehall. Interestingly, she plans to ultimately pursue a career in forensic psychology and mental health counseling, but she has no doubt that the arts will continue to play a central role in her life.

Adam Gripp started off as a small-town kid with big-time visions.  While he listens to and enjoys every kind of music, his major musical influences are centered around hip-hop. With an ultramagnetic attraction to all things artistic, he has been drawing his entire life in an attempt to capture and interpret some of the beautifully striking aspects of the world.  Also, he's set out on a life-long quest to learn the way of the six-string.  His secret weapons include, but are not limited to: his brain, his beard, sharpies, and Kuma the Siberian Husky.  Current positions consist of digital lead at Barnes & Noble and man-at-arts with the Blackwater Art Society.  Quiet at times, a rioter of rhymes. Undiscovered, undefined, undercover, underlined.  In love with Mother Nature, he is a World Warrior representing Virginia and the 80s.

Rachel had an epiphany during work one day and decided to walk out of the gray cubicle maze into a new and exciting career as a coffeehouse lounger and freelance writer.  She decided that there was no amount of money in the world that could convince her to go back to corporate America, so she combined her love of reading, music, and writing to become a poor, starving artist-type.  She has never been happier and will never look back.  She prefers an honest and simplistic low drama life.  She loves her family, God, friends, and her Shih-Tzu Daisy, and not necessarily in that order.  Her musical roots were formed in the days of the Commodores, Chicago, Barry White, The Isley Brothers, and later, Luther Vandross.  She now enjoys all kinds of music but tends to gravitate towards Christian rock and local indie bands.

Thibaud, who has been making music since the 4th grade, strongly believes that quality does not always flow from an expected source. Bands that satisfy you one moment can disappoint you the next. "Good music", and good art in general, is that which moves you.  Because of this, everything that is good is subjective. Great music can come from anywhere and anyone, even the expectantly bleak mainstream mammoths. Most importantly, Thibaud strives for diversity in his passions; not only listening to different music, but writing poetry, fiction, screenplays, and reviews, as well as working to become a respected photographer, and dreams of ultimately combining all his talents in the cinema industry.  With his love for writing, music, and detail, Thibaud attempts to give you his honest opinion of what moves him in hopes that he can in turn move others with what he has found.

His name is Tom Ass.  All that matters to him is that you support local unsigned bands that are busting their asses to make the scene all it can be and once was.  He's a Virginia Beach local who has been playing guitar for 16 years and has dabbled in EVERY GENRE OF MUSIC!  He's played in local bands for the last 10 years including punk, reggae, metal, alternative, rap and (though he hates to admit it) cover bands.  Everyone makes mistakes I guess.  He has made his home for the last 5 years as a member of DHH (David Hasselhoff's Haircut).

A note from the Man himself: "I hope you enjoy my stories cause they are straight out of the horse's mouth.  Please support local music, and don't let the radio and internet tell you what is 'cool.'  Decide for yourself and let the music be your guide.  Hope to see you at a show sometime soon.

Robin Marschak was born and raised in Richmond, VA. After a brief attempt at attending an engineering school in Claremont, CA he returned home to study English at VCU, an endeavour he is currently still engaged in. One thing that has remained unchanging throughout his life is a love of music. He was raised on local bands such as the Ululating Mummies and Dogs New Clothes as well as more classic mainstream bands such as the Beatles and the Grateful Dead. As a teen his tastes shifted towards the punk scene and bands such as TSOL, Operation Ivy, and Rancid, and while he maintains a deep love of this style of music he has broadened his listening palette quite a bit in recent years especially into the realms of country and old time music. His favorite bands currently are Popebear, a blues-funk fusion band out of Pasadena, CA, the Hot Seats, a string band from Richmond, and the No BS! Brass Band, also from Richmond. As far as more national acts go he tries to catch shows by bands like Umphrey's McGee, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the Belleville Outfit whenever possible.

He currently finds himself back in Richmond after a seven year road trip covering nine states with two of the last three years in the birthplace of rock and roll and the home of blues: Memphis, Tennessee.  This was a home where he could walk out on his balcony on a warm summer's night and hear the outdoor musicians on Beale Street.  Chandler has enjoyed print publication in several different books and magazines.

Some of the bands he has photographed over the past four years include, in no particular order but their own (deep breath now): Amy LaVere, Blues Traveler, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Drive-By Truckers, Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zeros, Flesh Mountain Boys, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Hillbilly Casino, Jeff Beck, Kaleidoscope, Lucero, Mouserocket, North Mississippi All-Stars, Organ Thief, Preston Shannon, Ruth Foster, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Tora Tora, University of Memphis Faculty Jazz Band, Victor Wainwright & the Wildroots, Widespread Panic, and Zoogma, (inhale).

"I was fortunate in Memphis to meet Catrina Guttery from the Memphis Music Foundation who basically--through her introductions--handed me the keys to a lot of doors.  Allowing me the opportunity to meet and photograph a large number of bands live, in the studio, and backstage. Without her prodding I'd still be shooting plants and such." His current tally stands at 271 bands documented through his lens, and that tally grows weekly.

James has been an avid music enthusiast and photographer since childhood.  At age nine, he attended his first concert with his parents, seeing Phil Collins at the Sky Dome in Toronto.  He would consistently be found playing in his father's darkroom, but has received little formal training in his art.  For James, the fusion of photography and music occurred after leaving college to tour extensively across the country.  James has returned to Richmond to finish his degree in Political Science and is an active force in the music scene.  The beginnings of his comprehensive library of local and national acts can be found on his website: RichmondImage.com.
